How do you cook the kibble?Updated a year ago

We use an extrusion cooking process with temperatures around 200 degrees which is the kill point for all pathogens.

What is Extrusion?

Imagine taking a handful of dough and pushing it through a play-doh mold or pasta maker. The extrusion process for making kibble is similar, but on a much larger, industrial scale.

First, all the dry ingredients like grains, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are mixed together to form a dough-like mixture. This mixture is then fed into a machine called an extruder.

Inside the extruder, the dough is subjected to heat and pressure. As it moves through the extruder barrel, it is cooked and shaped into the desired kibble form by being forced through small holes or die openings at the end.

As the hot, cooked dough emerges from these die openings, it expands and takes on its final crunchy, porous texture. This expansion is caused by the rapid release of pressure and moisture flashing off as steam.

The newly formed kibble pieces then go through a drying and cooling process to achieve their final moisture content and crunch.
